Cover-Ups.

Old work, hidden, reframed, or reborn.

Cover-ups are the work other shops won't take, and the work Soul Patch has built a reputation on. Whether it's a name from an ex, a stick-and-poke from a regrettable Tuesday, or a piece that just didn't age well, a good cover-up turns the old tattoo into something you actually want to show off.

The honest truth about cover-ups is they require constraints. The new piece needs to be larger and darker than the old one, with strategic placement of black areas and shadow to hide the original lines. That means an open mind on the client's part. The right cover-up design isn't always the one you walked in wanting, it's the one that actually erases what's underneath.

For very dark or heavy old work, we sometimes recommend a few sessions of laser lightening before the cover, which gives the new artist far more options. For most pieces, though, we can plan a strong cover from day one.

What it's good for

  • Names, dates, and lettering from past relationships
  • Old tribal or barbed-wire pieces from the 90s and 2000s
  • Faded or blown-out amateur work
  • Stick-and-pokes that did not heal well
  • Old shop tattoos that just no longer fit who you are

Bring to your consult

  • Clear, well-lit photos of the existing tattoo (in addition to seeing it in person)
  • A sense of what you want the new piece to feel like, not necessarily what it should be
  • Examples of cover-up work you like, especially designs that hide the original well
  • Patience, the right cover plan often takes a couple of consult rounds

The Process

Cover consults are longer than standard. The artist studies the old piece, discusses constraints, and proposes design directions. Some old work cannot be fully covered with ink alone. We will tell you that honestly upfront and discuss options like laser-then-cover.

Timeframe

Most cover-ups run as multi-session pieces. The first session lays down the cover design's structure, the second pushes saturation and detail. Total time is similar to a fresh piece of equivalent size, sometimes 20% longer because of the extra work hiding original lines.

Aftercare Note

Cover-ups often involve heavier ink saturation than fresh work, so initial healing can be more intense. Standard aftercare applies, but expect a slightly longer peeling stage and some areas to feel especially raised for the first 10 days. See the full aftercare guide for the full routine.
