Soul Patch Tattoo is what happens when an artist who's spent two decades behind the machine decides to set up his own room and run it the way he wishes every shop ran. No rush jobs. No flash off the wall passed off as custom. Every piece drawn for the person, every consult free, every appointment given the time it actually needs.

Dano Friedman opened the doors in 2014. By 2015, the city of Riverbank was trying to push tattoo shops out, lumping them in zoning ordinances with adult businesses and check cashers. Dano showed up at city council and said the line that's stuck: "I tattoo on grandmas and members of my church. It's not like that anymore." The shop's been there ever since, and the work it puts out has earned a 100% recommend rating across nearly sixty Facebook reviews and a local reputation as the Central Valley's go-to for the cover-ups other shops won't touch.

The Work

How a piece
gets made.

It starts with a conversation. Always free, never rushed. The artist asks what you're picturing, why it matters, where it's going to live on your body. Then they go away and draw. Sometimes once, sometimes three times. The drawing is the part most shops skip and it's the part Soul Patch insists on, because the difference between a tattoo that holds up at year ten and one that doesn't is decided at the drafting stage, not at the chair.

When the design is dialed, you sit. Smaller pieces in one session. Sleeves and chest plates across multiple sessions, a few weeks apart, so the skin can heal and tell the artist what the next pass needs. Color goes deeper on the second visit. Black and grey gets its final value. Cover-ups, the pieces other shops turn away, get planned with the constraint that the new design must be larger and darker than the old, and built to hide what's underneath.

The Tradition

Friday
the 13th.

Every Friday the 13th the shop runs flash days. Original sheets, designed by the artists, $75 for full color or shaded, with a separate sheet of smaller black-and-grey designs at $50. Doors open at 10am, close at 10pm, first come first served. By midday the sheets are usually half-sold. By the time the moon's up, the shop has tattooed more people in twelve hours than it does in a typical week.

It's not a marketing stunt. It's the one day a year the shop turns into a rolling community room, where regulars who haven't been in for a while come back with their friends, where first-time tattoo clients find an excuse to finally do it, where every artist puts pieces on skin they designed themselves. The flash sheets get harder every year. The line gets longer.

Dano Friedman

Twenty-one years behind the machine, eleven of them in this room. Dano's portfolio is the reason most clients walk in: realism that holds up over time, black and grey with the kind of contrast you can read from across the room, and cover-ups that have rescued more than a few regrets. Outside the chair he runs the shop, plans the flash sheets, and runs the football pools and Christmas raffles that benefit local kids' sports teams. The shop is family, and his family is the shop.

Two decades of work, three thousand followers on Instagram, a hundred-percent recommend on Facebook. Earl is the steady hand on the schedule. He moves equally well across color and black and grey, and the Friday the 13th flash sheets come out of his sketchbook as often as anyone's. Approachable, accommodating, the artist clients keep coming back to once they've sat with him once.

Five years in and finding his lane. Isiah is the artist clients come to when they have a feeling but not a picture, when they want something custom but can't sketch it. He works across both color and black and grey, lives in the design phase, and has built a quiet reputation for turning vague ideas into pieces that hit exactly right. The youngest of the crew, with the patience of someone twice his bench time.

Philosophy

A tattoo isn't a sticker. It's a piece of art that has to live on a body that moves, ages, sweats, and gets sun for thirty or forty years. The tattoos that survive that journey aren't the most detailed ones at week two. They're the ones planned for skin, executed with the right amount of saturation, and given time to heal. Every piece Soul Patch sends out the door is built for year fifteen, not just the day after.

That's the rule. Everything else, the shop layout, the appointment-only model, the free consults, the drawing-first process, the multi-session schedule on bigger pieces, the cover-up specialty, exists to serve that rule.
